International Day of People with Disability is observed universally on the 3rd of December every year with a relevant theme. This year’s theme of the day is “Promoting the Participation of Persons with Disabilities and their Leadership: Taking Action on the 2030 Development Agenda”.
LGB Regional Institute of Mental Health being a standalone institute with a regional mandate for mental health has been regularly observing the International Day of People with Disability every year. This year also Centre for Rehabilitation Sciences, LGBRIMH, Tezpur is observing the International Day of People with Disability with the collaboration of Amaljyoti Sacred Heart Day Care Centre, Tezpur; Parivartan (NGO), Tezpur; Department of Social Work, Tezpur University, Tezpur; Love and Acceptance (NGO), Tezpur, Assam on 5th of December, 2019 at the Auditorium of the Institute. The program was attended by 300 people.
Program started with the tree plantation where all the invited guests, faculties, students and staff of LGBRIMH took part in the initiative at the premises of the hospital.
The program was started with the lighting of lamp by persons with disabilities led by Dr. Lalithkumar Natarajan (Managing Trustee, Love and Acceptance NGO) along with the dignitaries, the Guest of Honor, Dr. K. Kemprai, Jt. Director Health Services, Sonitpur, the Honored Guest, Mrs Samshera Hazarika, District Social Welfare Officer, Sonitpur and Dr. S.K. Deuri, Director, LGBRIMH, Tezpur.
The inaugural program started with Dr. Sonia Pereira Deuri, (I/C Centre for Rehabilitation Sciences, and Head & Prof. Dept. of Psychiatric Social Work) delivering the welcome address. She extended a warm welcome towards dignitaries, differently abled persons and participants present in the program. She also stressed on the importance of 2030 Sustainable Development Goal. ‘None is to be left behind’, should be the motto for all who work in the welfare and development sector.
Dr. Lalitkumar Natrajan unfolded the theme of this year’s International Day of People with Disability “Promoting the Participation of Persons with Disabilities and their Leadership: Taking Action on the 2030” and expressed his concerns about the needs of people with disability. He urged people to come forward to stand along with each other and to break the barriers that come along in physical and social life.
Dr. Kemprai, later spoke on the health related services for the people with disability and how it helps them to have a standing in society. Mrs Samsera Hazarika, talked on the various social welfare schemes and the process of accessing them in a very elaborative and detailed way. The house was also addressed by Dr. Salmi Jahan, former Jt-Director of Health Services and Ms Pushpa Deka, Commissioner, Tezpur Municipalit.
Dr. S.K. Deuri, Director, LGBRIMH, Tezpur delivered the Presidential message. He emphasised on promotion of institutional facilities and to make accessibility a norm in all facilities. He declared that a Centre for Child Development will be coming up in few years to cater to the comprehensive needs of the children with disability.
Sr. Salomy, In-charge, Amaljyoti Sacred Heart Diability Centre, Tezpur, gave the vote of thanks and program concluded with the National Anthem.
The observation ended with a cultural program by persons with disability.
